The First 70 Film Project

The Project

Last May, California announced plans to close one quarter of their 278 parks, a devastating move that is intended to save the state a mere $22 million per year. The closure list includes thousands of acres of park land, recreation areas, wildlife reserves, and 50% of the state's historic parks. By July 2012 Californians will be bereft of 70 magnificent natural parks. The media has done little to disclose the ongoing closures or emphasize their impact.

Not wanting to miss the chance to see these places before they were gone forever, we decided to make our way across California in a converted airport shuttle bus, shooting as many parks and people as possible. Individuals we met along the way were concerned about the closing of their local parks, but no one had a collective firsthand experience of the overall picture. As we connected dots on a map, a pattern emerged. No one knew exactly what the conditions of closure would be, nor could they see how the state would ultimately benefit.

The First 70 is a short film about Californians banding together to enact change and develop solutions in the face of a glaring bureaucratic oversight. Volunteers have been forced to lend even more of their time and effort to support the already grossly underfunded state park system. Independent organizations and nonprofits have become obligated to step up to the challenge of keeping parks open, supporting them financially while working within the state's guidelines.

Greetings!

I'm angry at the California Citizens Redistricting Committee. For the past 40 years, I have lived in Marin and Sonoma Counties along the 101 corridor. In every election, I have voted for candidates whose districts included the Northern California coast, and who paid attention to its issues. When I lived in Marin, I was sometimes represented by politicians from Sonoma. The reverse was also true. But grew to understand that, though each county's residents viewed the others suspiciously, they all shared a love of the coast and voted for candidates who protected it well.

The Committee released its new redistricting maps yesterday, and disenfranchised the coast from most of Sonoma County's residents along the 101 corridor. In some or all of the cities of Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Cotati, and Petaluma, residents will now be voting for candidates for state or federal offices who have not one foot of Sonoma County coast in their districts. The political views which will be debated in those races will turn an about face from the coast and Redwood Empire to the Napa Valley and the Vallejo Hwy 80 corridor. Issues such as marine sanctuaries and coastal access will be replaced by port facilities and highway interchanges.

I don't think Sonoma County residents will like being moved to the inland empire. And I'm hoping they will show their love of the coast by electing strong environmentalists to the whichever political offices remain representing stretches of the coast. The 2nd and 10th Assembly Districts include the Marin and Sonoma coasts, and every resident except those in Rohnert Park and those along Hwy 12 from Kenwood to Boyes Hot Springs. The latter group is included in the 2nd Senate District which covers the Marin and Sonoma coasts. Unfortunately, residents of Rohnert Park have no representatives of any coast. And the coast loses federal representation in the 2nd Congressional District from most all of Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, and Cotati residents.

Yesterday, I joined the members of the Mendocino Coastwalkers for dinner. I drove up from Santa Rosa to Van Damme State Park where they were spending the last night of the hike, and was able to take some of their time to describe Coastwalk's entire program activities, and listen to their feedback.

I was able to show them the new website, and they had plenty of useful ideas about improvements to it and to Coastwalk operations.

2010 California Coastal Views Film Festival

Once again, California Coastal Views is hosting a video festival made up of scenes of the California coast which appear on YouTube. For the next month, I'll be looking on Google Earth, and querying entrants from the previous festival, to assemble here the nominees.

Eligible videos must show the California coast, must not have competed in previous CCV festivals, and be loaded on YouTube no later than July 15th, 2010. No real estate sale promotions or chamber of commerce ads. The divisions and categories will be developed to account for the length (shorts, up to five minutes, feature length) and amount of features (music, transitions, advanced editing). I'm currently scanning Google Earth starting at Wright's Beach and heading north to the Oregon border. Then, I'll start again south to Mexico. Nominees are invited to submit links directly to me at gfearon@sonic.net. Deadline for submission is October 31, 2010. Finalists will be announced on December 31st, and winners on January 31st, 2011.

This post will be updated with nominees, in divisions and categories as they are developed.

Today, Coastwalk California organized a rally at Doran Beach Park, in cooperation with HandsAcrossTheSand, to protest oil exploration off the coasts of the nation, and to support Congressperson Lynn Woolsey'd bill (HR223) to expand the National Marine Sanctuary from Bodega Bay to Point Arena.

Coastwalk is always researching the growing resources on the web which support outdoor activities for those which can be useful in building support for the California Coastal Trail. One of those we have found recently which looks very promising is EveryTrail.Com.

EveryTrail has capitalized on the wave of new cell phones and GPS devices which can capture the routes and scenes of hikers, mountain bikers, walkers, and all others who love the outdoors and want to show all of us where the best places are to enjoy it.

Day Hikes on the California Coastal Trail

Greetings!

Last Sunday, I led a hike on the California Coastal Trail. Coastwalk sent out an email notice to members concerning upcoming hikes, and several chose to join me on a walk along a stretch of Sonoma County coast in the Salt Point State Park.

ShellyRae O'Connor and her family came along, and she took some wonderful photographs of the hike. Her Flicker website
Shellerae has 597 of them posted, and they provide some great California coastal views. Since that's what this blog is all about, she has agreed to let me both link to the collection, and include some of them in a video I'm going to create. Thanks, Shelly, and here's hoping they convey half of how much fun we had.

Building support for the mission of Coastwalk means constantly looking for ways to expand the number of people who know about what Coastwalk does. Discovering groups of outdoor activists who have been to the California coast, and finding methods to help them do what they want to do - while serving to advance your activities - has to be the right way to proceed.

Geocachers are enthusiasts who place small caches of removeable treasures in locations identified by their Global Positioning System (GPS) locations on websites. Almost a thousand of them have been placed close to the California Coastal Trail, a project of Coastwalk. Coastwalk is building an interactive website which identifies the trail locations, is engaged in placing signs of the Trail, and is soliciting volunteers who can provide it with the GPS locations of the signs and other coastal access points for its website. The latest project of this blog is to bring the two groups together in an organized way.

The website of the geocachers identifies by GPS location all of the geocaches which exist, including those on the California Coastal Trail. Because the geocaching community has also collaborated with Google Earth staff, a method has been produced which downloads all of the geocache locations to an overlay on Google Earth. I have downloaded that overlay to my home computer, and am in the process of transferring to a spreadsheet the vital information about each geocache on the Coastal Trail. My objective is to assemble a database of the potential geocachers who could assist us in the development of a GPS-coded trail.

I have also produced a short video, which I have placed on Youtube. It can be seen here. I will be sending a link to those geocachers I find who have placed caches near the California Coastal Trail to invite them to our official signings of the trail.

California Coastal Views Film Festival

Greetings!

The First Annual California Coastal Views Film Festival has begun. Film entries providing non-commercial California coastal views are being acquired from those submitted to Youtube.com. The film competition will be judged as follows:

Films are being collected from those tagged with key words indicating they contain scenes of the California coast. Until May 1st, they will screened and separated into logical categories (coastrides, places and wildlife, trips, waves and surfers, etc.). From May 6th until May 2, a group of judges will be asked to narrow the selections to the top ten in each of the categories. The final judging will be done by the members of the 2003 California Coastal Expedition, those who walked the entire coast of California during that spring and summer. Links to the winning films will be sent to this year's coastwalkers prior to their scheduled walks on California's coastal counties. Coastwalk's reputation for hosting walks in California counties over the past 24 years makes it especially qualified to partner with us to help coastal activists enjoy these films.

A newcomer to blogs, I'm beginning to find quite a few blogs that record the coastal experience. Searching for blogs that contain "California", and either "coastal access" or "beach access" resulted in many responses. While many of these are contained in travel journals, other blogs entries reveal the writer's passion for places they cherish along the coast.

I'm going to use the first few posts to this blog to provide some organization to the search results. If I have any chance of turning this blog into a useful resource, it will result from helping passionate Californian coastal activists communicate with each other more effectively.

Accessing Coastal Views

During 2007, issues concerning access and preservation of the California coast will be brought before local county planning commissions, county boards of supervisors, and regional and state coastal commissions.

California Coastal Trail advocates will be marking the trail with the newly-approved Trail Logo, and issues surrounding the Trail will surface needing widespread discussion.

Partnerships with the many organizations which are concerned with the entire coastal environment (ocean, rivers, beaches, development, etc.) requires an open dialogue on a broad range of topics.

I invite those who have contributions to these discussions to contact me to gain access to the posting process.
